A .dk domain mainly tells you which web address the site uses. It is not proof that the company behind it is registered in Denmark. Forbrug.dk points out directly that a shop with .dk in the address can still be based in China, for example. The Danish Consumer Ombudsman has also received many complaints about foreign online stores with Danish-sounding names, where goods turned out to be poor quality and had to be returned abroad at the customer’s expense. The key question is therefore not: “Does the site look Danish?” It is: “Who am I making the contract with?” ## Find the legal company name Start in the footer and on pages such as “Contact”, “About”, “Terms” and “Returns”. You should be able to find: - the company’s legal name - a physical address - an email address - a CVR number or equivalent foreign registration number - details of where an item must be returned A brand name is not necessarily the same as the company name. “Nordic Lifestyle” can be the public name, while the contract is legally made with a completely different company. That is not automatically a problem, but the connection should be clear. Compare the register with the webshop: 1. Is the company active? 2. Is the name the same as in the terms? 3. Does the address match? 4. Does the company’s industry make sense for what the shop sells? 5. Is the company relatively new, even if the shop claims to have existed for many years? That last point matters: the presence of a real CVR number is not documentation by itself. The Consumer Ombudsman has warned about shops that use fictional numbers or numbers that belong to a company with no connection to the website. ## Look at the domain itself as well For .dk domains you can search registration details at Punktum dk. For other domains, a normal domain lookup can show when it was registered and, in some cases, who registered it. Details can be hidden for privacy reasons, so missing owner data is not automatically a warning sign. The registration date can still be useful. If a webshop tells a long story about many years of experience while the domain is brand new, look at the rest extra carefully. ## Look for the return address — not only the contact address Some webshops list a European or Danish contact address, while returns must be sent to a warehouse outside the EU. Others only give the return address after you have asked to cancel the purchase. Read the return terms before you buy. Watch for wording such as “our international main warehouse”, “the customer pays all return costs”, or a note that the return address is only provided if you contact customer service. A foreign return address does not prove that the shop is dishonest. When you buy from a company in Denmark or another EU country, you generally have strong consumer protection, including a 14-day right of withdrawal for most online purchases and a right to complain about faults. A webshop outside the EU can in some cases still be covered by Danish rules if it clearly markets itself towards Denmark. In practice it can be much harder to complain and enforce a claim when the company is outside the EU. That is why the seller’s actual location matters, even if the site looks completely Danish. ## A Danish look is a signal — not documentation Danish language, MobilePay-like icons, kroner and .dk can all contribute to a feeling of safety. They should not stand alone. Check whether the domain, company name, registration number, address and return terms point to the same business.
